The Mirror of God's Law
by Tim Ahlman
When you find yourself in front of a mirror do you like what you see? A mirror reflects your physical body, but it can't show your true self - your emotional and spiritual self. If it could, would you like what you see?
Pride and Shame: The Two Extremes
Some of us are confident and proud of ourselves, while others struggle with shame and self-hatred. But apart from faith in Jesus, both pride and shame lead to extreme ends - hedonism or nihilism. However, God's Law serves as a mirror that reflects who we truly are.
God's Law: A Mirror of Our Sin
There are two types of laws - human laws and God's Law. Human laws judge based on actions, but God's Law judges the heart. It exposes our sin and covetousness, and shows us that we are poor, miserable sinners in need of a Savior. The Law levels the playing field and reminds us that we have no right to stand above others in their sin.
We Are Sinners in Need of a Savior
When we look in the mirror of God's Law, we see our need for a Savior. And that's why Jesus came - to bring us grace, life, and unconditional love. When the Law kills us, the grace of God in Jesus Christ brings us life by faith. So look in the mirror and smile back at Jesus, who loves you so much.
