Confirmation FAQ's

What is Confirmation?
In the Lutheran Church, confirmation is a significant milestone in a young person's faith journey. It's a public declaration of their faith, following their baptism, and a time to deepen their understanding of core Christian beliefs. Confirmation classes provide a supportive environment for students to explore their faith, ask questions, and connect with other Christians.
Who is Confirmation for?
Confirmation at CG is open to any 5th-8th grader (and their parents!), though high schoolers can also participate if they haven't been confirmed previously. It's a two-year commitment, with families choosing consecutive years that fit their schedule. Parents play a crucial role, and are expected to attend classes alongside their child. If a parent can't attend, another adult mentor (grandparent, godparent, etc.) can participate.
Program Details
  • Schedule: The program is divided into fall and spring semesters, typically starting the first or second Wednesday of September and January, respectively. It runs for around 20 lessons per year.
  • Rite of Confirmation: Confirmation typically takes place on the last Sunday of October, Reformation Sunday
Additional Commitments
  • Completing any missed classwork.
  • Two "pep talks" per semester with the instructor (individualized memory work & binder check).
  • 25 service hours per year.
  • Monthly worship notes.
  • Confirmation retreat (held winter/spring).
  • Sharing a personal testimony publicly at the end of the program.

Missed Classes
All lessons, slides, and worksheets are available on the church website (link: christgreenfield.church/confirmation-lessons). Videos/lessons are usually posted the day after the class. We encourage participants to prioritize attending at least ⅔ of the sessions, but please speak with the Confirmation leader if this proves challenging.
Leaders and Childcare
Confirmation classes are led by pastors, vicars, and DCEs (Directors of Christian Education). Childcare is available every Wednesday evening for younger siblings of Confirmation students.
Class Structure
Confirmation classes run from 6:30-8:00pm each Wednesday. The first 30 minutes involve separate activities – students participate in small groups, while parents join "Parent Time" for deeper exploration of the evening's content.

First Communion
First communion is offered to students ideally in their first or second year of confirmation. It takes place at the Maundy Thursday service. Students interested in first communion should attend the communion workshop traditionally held on Palm Sunday afternoon. Those not participating in Confirmation can also take first communion by making arrangements with the Confirmation leaders beforehand (communion workshop or similar instruction required).
