Did You Know...

The Hebrew word "Bethel" means "House of God." Jacob, from the Old Testament, had a dream of angels ascending and descending a ladder to heaven. When he woke up, he said, "Surely the Lord is in this place, and heaven and earth are touching here." He named the place Bethel, meaning "House of God."

The scholar N.T. Wright writes that when God's people gather for worship, it is a "thin space" where heaven and earth overlap. Scripture also describes us as the temple of the Holy Spirit. This means that Bethel, the House of God, is not a place, but a people. You and I together are the House of God, the thin space where heaven and earth meet.

So today, be aware of where you are. Know that God is with you there. And ask yourself: How can I build the House of God in this place? How can I bring heaven on earth here?
