45 Years of Christ Greenfield

For 45 years, God has been faithfully at work through Christ Greenfield—planting seeds of faith, growing community, and shaping lives in ways both seen and unseen.

On Sunday, February 8, we’ll gather at both campuses to celebrate this milestone. Together, we’ll give thanks for God’s faithfulness, reflect on how He has worked through this church, and look ahead with hope for what’s to come. Refreshments will be available after each service, and we would love for you to be part of this celebration.

How It All Began

Christ Greenfield began as a mission effort rooted in faith, prayer, and a willingness to start small.

In the late 1970s, worship services began among Lutherans living in and around Sunland Village, supported by neighboring congregations who sensed God calling them to serve a growing community. What started as separate efforts came together in 1980, forming what became known as Greenfield Lutheran Mission.

Early worship gatherings were held in temporary spaces—Sunland Village, Greenfield Elementary School, and later Falconer Funeral Home in Gilbert. These were humble beginnings, shaped by faith, flexibility, and trust that God was building something lasting.

Becoming Christ Greenfield

As the mission grew, leadership was formed, worship life deepened, and the foundation of the church took shape.

In December 1981, the congregation officially chose the name Christ’s Greenfield Lutheran Church. One month later, on January 24, 1982, the church celebrated Charter Sunday, marking a significant step in its life together.

Later that year, Rev. Kevin Wyssmann was called and installed as the church’s first permanent pastor. Under his leadership, Christ Greenfield continued to grow in worship, education, and service.

Putting Down Roots

In 1985, Christ Greenfield moved into its present location, establishing a permanent home after years of faithful worship in temporary spaces. As the congregation continued to grow, additional educational facilities were added, expanding ministry to children, families, and the wider community.

What began with a small group of believers trusting God step by step had become a thriving church—still rooted in the same faith that planted the first seeds.

Still Growing

The story of Christ Greenfield isn’t just about the past—it’s about what God continues to do.

For 45 years, God has been faithful through seasons of planting, waiting, growth, and renewal. The same God who led this church from borrowed spaces to a permanent home is still at work today—calling, shaping, and growing His people.

“One plants, another waters, but God gives the growth.”
— 1 Corinthians 3:6
