What Do You Really Value?
I was a young dad with my first “big boy” job and a real paycheck. Needless to say—I was in over my head. Around that time, I picked up a book called Your Money or Your Life. It wasn’t a Christian book, but it asked a powerful question I couldn’t shake: Does your money align with your values?
The first step it outlined was simple but challenging: look at where your time and money are going. That’s what you really value—whether you mean to or not.
Maybe your spending shows you value convenience (hello, Chick-fil-A).
Maybe your time shows you value serving others.
Once you see it, you get to decide: Is this what I want my life to reflect?

What We Treasure, We Follow
A fun example: I’m a Vikings fan. (Tragically.) Because I value them, my time and money follow. I watch the games. I buy the merch. I suffer every season.
More seriously, our family values are summed up in this:
Live simply. Practice hospitality. Show mercy.
We want our time and money to reflect those values—not perfectly, but intentionally.
I believe that’s part of what Jesus meant in Matthew 6:21:

I believe that’s part of what Jesus meant in Matthew 6:21:
“For where your treasure [time and money] is, there your heart [values] will be also.”
Jesus Doesn’t Tiptoe Around It
Matthew 6:21 is short—but it hits deep.
It’s not just about giving—it’s a spiritual x-ray.
Wherever your time, money, and energy go… your heart follows.
And that’s either shaping your life toward God—or away from Him.

And that’s either shaping your life toward God—or away from Him.
Treasure Is About Trust
The things we treasure most are often the things we’re afraid to lose.
That’s why giving can feel like loss—until we remember who God is.
When we give, we’re saying:
“God, I trust You more than I trust my comfort.”
We’re inviting Him to shape not just our budget—but our heart.

It’s Not About the Amount—It’s About the Direction
Take inventory this week: Where are your time and money going?
Is that what you want to value?
If not, ask God to guide your heart toward what truly matters—and who He’s calling you to be.
