One of my favorite holidays is Christmas—not just because we celebrate the miracle of God putting on flesh and coming to be our Savior, but also because of the gifts.
When I was a kid, the best part of Christmas was receiving. The thrill of new toys, surprises, and yes… the piles of wrapping paper. But over the years, especially as a young adult and newlywed, the sparkle started to fade. Gifts became more practical—gift cards, socks, maybe a kitchen gadget or two.
Then everything changed when I became a dad.
The gift-giving part of Christmas completely shifted. Watching my kids’ eyes light up as they opened something I picked out just for them—that was it. Their joy became my joy. I had more fun giving than receiving, and I realized something deep:
Giving is a reflection of the Father’s heart.

God is a Cheerful Giver
Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 9:7,
Why does God love a cheerful giver?
Because He is one.
He delights in giving—lavishing us with love, grace, forgiveness, and the ultimate gift of Jesus. When we give freely and joyfully, we’re not just following a command.
We’re stepping into His nature.
“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

What the Bible Says About Ownership and Joy
“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it.”
—Psalm 24:1
Everything we have—our time, our talents, our finances—belongs to God. When we truly live like that’s true, something shifts. Our giving becomes joyful. Our trust deepens. And our hearts begin to mirror His.
Reflect On This Verse This Week
“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give…”
—2 Corinthians 9:7
—2 Corinthians 9:7
