Creation to Christ: Seeing God’s Story Written Everywhere

If I had to choose, I’d pick the mountains. But really, I just love creation. As Psalm 19 reminds us:

The heavens declare the glory of God,

and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

Day to day pours out speech,

and night to night reveals knowledge.

There is no speech, nor are there words,

whose voice is not heard. (Psalm 19:1–3)

Creation is God’s cathedral—vast, stunning, and alive with His glory. I remember driving into Yosemite National Park for the first time and nearly driving off the road around every corner. Not because I wasn’t paying attention—but because every turn revealed a new, breathtaking view. I couldn’t believe a place so beautiful existed.

In our series Stepping Stones, we are walking our way through the entire Old Testament—from Creation to Christ. Every story, every promise, every moment points forward to Jesus. The Old Testament is not a disconnected collection of ancient stories; it is a declaration of God’s steady movement toward redemption.

From the very beginning, God promised a Savior. In Genesis 3:15, He says:

“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

Jesus Christ fulfilled that promise. At the cross, He crushed the head of the enemy—Satan, the ancient serpent—and won our forgiveness and salvation.

And Genesis 3 is only the beginning.

The entire Old Testament is an infinite well, revealing God’s heart and His relentless work to bring salvation through Christ. Every book contains promises, shadows, and signposts pointing forward to Jesus. As we dig into these stories, we begin to see the truth of Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 1:20:

“For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.”

One of the invitations of Stepping Stones is to experience this journey not just with our minds, but with our whole selves. Stepping Stones: Read Along & Take Outside is designed to help us do exactly that. It’s a guide for weekly hikes in God’s creation, pairing Old Testament story summaries with reflection questions—inviting us to see how each story becomes a stepping stone leading us to Christ.

As we walk through God’s Word and God’s world, we are reminded again and again: the story has always been about Jesus.

Long before us, people wrestled with the same questions we face today—questions about fear, ambition, safety, and God’s presence in a confusing world. In our Stepping Stones sermon series, we begin by asking a timeless question from the story of the Tower of Babel: Where is God in chaos and confusion?

The opening chapters of Genesis reveal a sobering truth: human ambition, when left unchecked, often leads to chaos and confusion. This doesn’t mean ambition itself is evil. Healthy ambition can be a gift—caring for family, stewarding our work well, and striving to serve others faithfully. But when ambition shifts from serving God to replacing God, things unravel quickly.

Many of us feel this tension today. Some prepare for worst-case scenarios, stocking “go-bags” or planning for societal collapse. Others watch economic instability, rapid technological growth, or the widening gap between rich and poor and quietly wonder, How is this all going to turn out? Beneath it all is a shared anxiety: Can human effort really secure our future?

Genesis shows us that this anxiety is nothing new. From Adam and Eve’s desire to be like God, to Cain’s jealousy, to the corruption that preceded the flood, Scripture reveals a familiar pattern: rebellion, consequences, God’s call to repentance, and God’s enduring promise to save. The Tower of Babel sits squarely within this cycle.

After the flood, God commanded humanity to spread out, fill the earth, and trust His provision. Instead, the people settled together on the plains of Shinar and pooled their ingenuity into building a city and a massive tower. Their motivation is revealing: “Let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” What appeared to be unity and progress was actually fear-driven ambition. They sought security apart from God, comfort over obedience, and control instead of trust.

The tower—likely a ziggurat—was not merely an engineering project. It was a spiritual statement. Humanity was attempting to reach heaven on its own terms and anchor identity in collective achievement rather than divine promise. God’s response may seem harsh at first, but it was deeply merciful. By confusing their language and dispersing them, God interrupted a path that would have led to deeper pride and greater destruction.

In other words, God met human chaos with loving restraint.

Scripture reminds us that God’s ambition is different from ours. While human ambition often curves inward toward self-glory, God’s ambition moves outward toward restoration. The scattering at Babel fulfilled God’s original command to fill the earth and created space for cultures, languages, and peoples to flourish under His care.

Even more importantly, Babel was not the end of the story.

At Epiphany, we see God’s ultimate answer to chaos and confusion in Jesus Christ—the true Light who entered a darkened world. Where humanity once tried to climb to heaven, God came down to us. Christ’s ambition was not self-exaltation but self-giving love, leading Him all the way to the cross. And where Babel fractured communication, the Holy Spirit later brought reversal at Pentecost—creating unity not through uniformity, but through faith in Christ.

The lesson is clear: faith in Christ alone brings order and clarity to sin’s chaos and confusion. God’s “no” is often an act of love, like a parent protecting a child from harm. Even when He allows disruption, it is always for the sake of redemption.

Babel reminds us that God is never absent in chaos. He is actively at work—correcting, guiding, and calling us back to Himself. And this story is only the beginning. God’s promise will soon move through one man, one family, and eventually bless all nations.

Stay tuned.

Medscape, Ministry, and the Myth of Being Ready

“From the hospital to the ministry, I’ve learned the same lesson: knowledge matters, but it won’t carry you when the weight hits. True leadership isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about pointing to the One who does.”

When I graduated from nursing school, I thought I had the tiger by the tail. I had aced my labs, memorized drug cards, and convinced myself I was ready to hit the floor running.

But stepping onto a hospital unit for the first time? It felt less like holding a tiger and more like being eaten by one. I was drowning. All the book smarts in the world didn’t prepare me for the chaos of real patients, real families, and real complications that never fit neatly into the textbook.

For the first two years as an RN, my lifeline was the Medscape app. I kept it open constantly—double-checking labs, drug interactions, side effects, and disease processes. It wasn’t just about information; lives were at stake. If I got it wrong, someone could die. Knowledge mattered, but it wasn’t enough. I had to learn what it meant to care for human beings made in God’s image.

Fast forward a decade, and I found myself finishing seminary. You’d think I would have learned my lesson about “being ready,” but no—I graduated convinced I had theology pretty well handled. After all, I had been parsing Greek verbs, reading Luther, and debating doctrine. Surely this time I had the tiger by the tail.

Wrong again.

The first time I sat across from someone as a pastor—whether in prayer, at Bible study, or leading a men’s group—I felt that same drowning sensation. Seminary gave me knowledge, but ministry requires more. Caring for bodies is weighty, but caring for souls is eternal.

And once again, I found myself reaching for my “Medscape.” Only this time it wasn’t an app—it was Scripture, prayer, godly counsel from mentors, and Spirit-led conversations that refined me. Just like in nursing, book knowledge is crucial, but it doesn’t prepare you for the emotional, spiritual, and relational weight of ministry. You only learn that by showing up, again and again.

This is where leadership comes in. I’ve always gravitated toward leadership roles, but leadership in God’s kingdom is different. At Christ Greenfield, at The Groves Bible study, in our men’s group The Upper Room—I constantly feel the weight of responsibility. And if I’m honest, I often feel unqualified.

But leadership in God’s kingdom has never been about being “enough.” It’s about faithfulness, not perfection. It’s about pointing to the One who is enough.

That’s why Romans 8:28 has become an anchor for me:

“We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”

God doesn’t call the equipped—He equips the called. Nursing taught me that in the ICU. Seminary taught me that in ministry. Leadership continues to drive it deeper into my heart.

The truth is, I don’t have all the answers. I’m still learning, still fumbling, still looking things up, still leaning on others. And maybe that’s exactly the point. Leadership isn’t about projecting confidence; it’s about practicing dependence—dependence on God, His Word, and His Spirit.

Caring for bodies reminded me of the urgency of life. Caring for souls reminds me of the weight of eternity. Both have taught me that learning is lifelong, growth is uncomfortable, and leadership is often forged in the very places we’d rather avoid.

But both also remind me of this:
I am not enough. But He is.

That’s the only way I know how to lead. That’s the only way any of us can. Whether in church, family, or workplace—don’t wait until you “feel ready.” You won’t. Step in anyway, with trembling hands and a trusting heart. God is faithful to equip those He calls, and His love is always for our good.

So if you catch me scrolling Scripture like it’s Medscape, just know: I’m still learning, still leading, and still trusting. And maybe that’s exactly what true leadership looks like.

Because the Bible says so.
Scripture is full of bold promises connected to baptism—Mark 16, Acts 2, and 1 Peter 3 are just a few examples.

But still, the question lingers… how does baptism do all that?
Isn’t it Jesus’ job to forgive, save, and give eternal life?

Yes—and that’s exactly the point.
Baptism has power because it’s not just plain water—it’s water connected to the living Word of God and the saving work of Christ.

Romans 6:3–5 says it this way:

“All of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death.

We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that,

just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father,

we too might walk in newness of life.”

In baptism, God does something we could never do on our own:
He unites us to Jesus Christ.

On our own, we’re described in Scripture as enemies of God—spiritually dead in our sin, unable to choose or reach for Him. Dead people can’t make themselves alive. So God had to act. He had to raise us to life—make us born again by water and the Spirit (John 3).

In baptism, you are united to Jesus’ death on the cross—where forgiveness was won for you.
And you are united to His empty tomb—where eternal life was secured for you.
That’s why baptism forgives. That’s why baptism gives life.
Because baptism unites you to the Savior Himself.

If you’ve been baptized, stand in awe today.
Stand in awe of what God has done—of who you belong to—and of the grace that covers you completely.

If you haven’t been baptized yet, maybe this is your invitation.
Maybe the very fact that you’re reading this is the Holy Spirit’s gentle nudge, drawing you toward the waters of new life.

There is no better time than now to be united to Jesus Christ.

Join us for Baptism Sunday + Family Day!

We’ll be celebrating new life in Christ through baptisms on Sunday, November 2 at Christ Greenfield.
Bring your family, invite your friends, and join the joy of seeing lives transformed by Jesus.

Whether you’re ready to take this step of faith or simply want to learn more about baptism, we’d love to walk with you.

Sunday, November 2
Family Day celebration following worship at Gilbert and East Mesa campuses
Sign up or learn more at christgreenfield.church/baptism

Sign up for Baptism

We want to be noticed. We want the “atta boy” or “atta girl.” We want to feel important, needed, admired. In those moments, our ambition shifts from glorifying God to glorifying self.

If that’s never been you—congratulations. But for most of us, selfish ambition creeps in more often than we’d like to admit. It places us at the center of the story, making us the heroes, the ones conquering, climbing, and achieving.

So what’s the remedy for selfish ambition?

1. We’ve pursued the idols of money, power, and status. We’ve built our own little kingdoms instead of serving God’s. And so, we need His Law to expose our pride and His grace to tear it down.

2. Forgiveness

Here’s the good news: our selfish ambition has already been crucified with Christ. Through confession comes forgiveness—real, restoring forgiveness. God’s love meets us in our striving and reminds us that we are already enough in Him.

Jesus’ ambition was never self-centered; it was always sacrificial. His goal was our salvation. The cross and the empty tomb are proof of that perfect, selfless ambition.

3.

Editor’s Note: As part of our Serving Challenge stories, Gilbert Campus Director Dan Morton shares about two humble leaders whose quiet faithfulness inspires him daily.

At Christ Greenfield, some of the most powerful ministry happens in the background. It looks like blowing leaves before sunrise, organizing a storage room, or prepping the campus for Sunday worship. It looks like people faithfully giving their time and energy, not for recognition, but for the Lord they love.

I am regularly inspired by servant leaders who embody this kind of faith. They quietly use their gifts and talents to bless others. Two people come to mind right away: Jan and Neil.

Jan: The Utility Player with a Joyful Heart

Jan is what I would call a utility player. She will jump in and help just about anywhere there is need. Over the years, Jan has quietly served in the office, prepared our campus for Sunday worship, organized areas that needed attention, and helped at countless one-off events. Wherever there’s a gap, she shows up.

But what stands out most isn’t just her willingness—it’s her spirit. Jan carries a heart of joy and peace that flows into everyone around her. Not only does she serve well, but she cares well for others through her selfless desire to know how you’re doing and see if she can meet yet another need.

Neil: Leading by Example in the Early Morning Hours

Another example would be a gentleman by the name of Neil. Neil heads up our Landscaping Crew. This crew comes every Saturday morning between 5:30 and 6:00 to blow leaves, trim branches, and care for the campus environment.

Neil’s leadership is both practical and inspirational. He models the hard work and dedication it takes to care for a campus that is constantly changing with growth, weather, and events. Even when the team isn’t around, Neil is here on weeknights, early mornings, and in all seasons—checking sprinkler systems, cleaning up downed trees, and putting in the sweat equity no matter the season. Like Jan, he would never ask for recognition, but instead finds joy in serving his Lord and Savior.

Faithful Friends, Faithful Servants

I am not only thankful for the hard work Jan and Neil put into our community, but so many of us are fortunate to call them friends. When I think of the hands and feet of Jesus doing His work here, I think of people like them and countless others who care for this place, its people, and ultimately their God who has served them so well first.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow—including these humble servants who love so much!

When Compassion Compels Us to Act

We’re all masters at excuses—whether it’s hitting snooze, avoiding a task, or putting off serving others. But Jesus shows us another way. Action comes before motivation, and even the smallest step of compassion can create a ripple effect of blessing.

There are a lot of great things about being a parent—and plenty of hard ones too. One thing I find especially difficult is dealing with my kids’ excuses.

“Why didn’t you put the dishes away like I asked?”
“I forgot. My sister distracted me. Then this happened… and because of that… and because of this…”

The excuses go on and on. I get frustrated—until I remember where they probably learned the habit. From me.

The truth is, we’re all pretty good at excuses. We justify our actions—or our inaction. For me, it’s my morning routine. I want to wake up early, go for a walk, and spend time in Scripture. I know those simple habits shape the rest of my day. Yet, almost every morning, I have a laundry list of reasons to hit snooze and stay in bed.

I once heard someone say: Motivation is a myth. The only thing that motivates you is starting. You’ll never feel motivated to wake up early. But if you just do it, motivation follows. Action comes first; motivation comes after.

Serving works the same way. I often want to want to serve others. But motivation lags and excuses pile up. That’s why the invitation is simple (to borrow Nike’s tagline): just do it. Even a small act—like saying hi to your neighbor or picking up trash on a walk—can ripple outward in powerful ways.

When I was a pastor in Michigan, I knew a man named Larry, a recovering addict who had been sober for over 30 years. He sponsored countless men through AA. When one of them would call in crisis, his first advice was always the same: Go serve someone. Step outside yourself. Do something for another person. The ripple effect was twofold—someone else was blessed, and the one serving found strength in the middle of their struggle.

This reminds me of one of my favorite stories in Scripture, in Mark 1. A leper came to Jesus and pleaded: “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” Scripture says Jesus was moved with compassion. His first act was to reach out and touch the man—something no one dared do. Then He healed him. No excuses. No hesitation. Just action. The ripple effect? A man restored, a family reunited, and word about Jesus spreading like wildfire.

So this week, let’s stop waiting for motivation and start moving in compassion. Let’s get out of our own way and follow Jesus. Just act—and then watch how He multiplies the ripple effect.

Call to Action

Let go of excuses. Don’t wait for motivation.
What small act of service has God placed in front of you today?
Go do it right now.

Making Yourself Available

Jesus never rushed past people. Even when the urgent pressed in, He carried margin in His heart to be fully available. What if we followed His example and built margin for divine interruptions in our own lives?

I don’t know if you’re like me, but sometimes I’m afraid to look at my calendar. It’s packed, and I feel trapped by the tyranny of the urgent—rushing from one meeting or activity to the next, while still trying to be present as a husband, a dad, and an employee.

So when someone asks about my availability, panic can set in. I’m already stretched thin. And yet, when I look at Jesus, I see a very different way of living. He had plenty of urgent demands, but they never seemed to rattle Him. Even in the middle of the crowd, He remained available.

One of my favorite stories of Jesus is in Mark 5 (take a moment to read it). Here’s the short version: Jairus, a synagogue leader, begs Jesus to heal his dying daughter. Jesus agrees and heads toward the house. But on the way, in the middle of the urgency, He’s interrupted by a woman who has been suffering for twelve years. With faith and desperation, she touches the hem of His garment—and she’s healed.

Jesus stops. He doesn’t brush past her or sigh in frustration. He makes Himself available. He calls her “daughter” and speaks peace and restoration over her. Then, after that moment of grace, He continues on to Jairus’ home, where He raises the little girl from the dead.

Jesus shows us that availability isn’t just about an empty calendar. It’s about a heart posture. Even when life is full, He carried margin in His heart and mind for the people around Him.

Building Margin in Your Life:

Pray: Ask the Spirit to give you Jesus-like margin in your heart and mind.

Prepare: Expect divine interruptions—and welcome them.

Plan: Create intentional space on your calendar. (Pro tip: give it an important-sounding name so no one schedules over it!)

The Serving Challenge isn’t just about doing more. It’s about being present, available, and open to how God wants to use you in the everyday interruptions.

Join the Serving Challenge

Find a Small Group

Serving From a Free Heart Freed by Christ

Serving in the church is not about obligation but about joy. When we realize we’re already loved and free in Christ, service shifts from “have to” into “get to.” Discover how to find your best fit for serving in this season and let your gifts become a channel of joy.

We don’t serve because we have to. We serve because we get to.

That simple shift—from duty to delight—changes everything about our life together as a church. Martin Luther captured this beautifully in The Freedom of a Christian:

“A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none… A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all.”

In Christ, we are set free from trying to earn God’s favor (Eph. 2:8–9). And in that freedom, faith becomes active in love for our neighbor (Eph. 2:10; Gal. 5:13). We don’t serve to pad our spiritual résumé or collect heavenly brownie points. We serve because, in Christ, we’re already loved, already forgiven, already His.

I once walked alongside a Serve Team member who had signed up out of obligation. She rotated through three different roles—KidsMin, Nursery, Welcome Desk—but none felt like the right fit. Every Sunday felt heavy, and her absence was noticed more than her presence.

After service one Sunday, I asked her, “What brings you joy? Where do you feel most alive?” Her eyes lit up as she shared about her daily prayer time and love for interceding on behalf of others. It was clear: she was a behind-the-scenes intercessor, not a hands-on helper.

When she joined our Spiritual Care and Prayer Callers team, the change was immediate. She became joyful, consistent, and deeply engaged—carrying the congregation on her heart throughout the week. The work wasn’t “easy,” but it became joyful. The have to turned into a get to.

That’s what the Gospel does. Christ’s finished work frees our hearts so our hands can serve.

Scripture invites this posture:

“Serve one another humbly in love” (Gal. 5:13).

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another… in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ” (1 Pet. 4:10–11).

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men” (Col. 3:23).

Notice: the emphasis is on the heart—glad, willing, cheerful (2 Cor. 9:7). God isn’t impressed by grim determination. He delights in children who know they’re secure in His grace and therefore gladly serve their neighbor.

One of my greatest joys is helping people find the right fit. Some come alive with kids. Others thrive greeting at the door, serving behind a camera, visiting the homebound, organizing spreadsheets, or praying quietly in the back. When a person’s giftings meet a real need, and their heart is at rest in Jesus, serving becomes a channel of joy rather than a drain.

Here’s another important truth: serving happens in seasons. Vocation is dynamic. When my kids were little, my main calling was to them. As they grew, I was freed to serve more widely. Now, as they near college, I’m simplifying again. That isn’t failure; it’s faithfulness. Jesus is Lord of your calendar, too. Sometimes love says “yes,” and sometimes love—still free, still joyful—says “not this season.”

So how do we lean into a joyful posture of service in the right season?

Start with the Gospel. You are not serving to get God to love you. In Christ, the verdict is already in: forgiven, beloved, free. Let service flow from gratitude, not guilt.

Name your season and your margins. What does faithfulness look like right now? If life is full—new baby, caregiving, grief, school, demanding job—receive the freedom to scale back. If margin is expanding, ask where the Lord might be inviting you to step forward.

Discern your joy-fit. What energizes you? What needs move your heart? Where affirmation from others meets inner delight, you’ll often find your calling.

Think neighbor, not scoreboard. The goal isn’t more serving—it’s loving the person in front of you. Sometimes that looks like a casserole, sometimes a spreadsheet, sometimes a quiet prayer.

We don’t serve because we have to. We serve because, in Christ, we get to. And in serving, we often find ourselves right where grace loves to place us: present to our neighbor, heart at rest, hands open, Jesus glorified.

If you’d like help finding a role that fits your gifts and season, I’d love to connect with you. Let’s discover that joyful “get to” together. → thilton@cglchurch.org

If you’ve spent any time with me, you’ve likely heard me say: “One of God’s greatest gifts is the gift of relationships—first with Himself, through Jesus Christ, and then with one another.”

I wholeheartedly believe this. Relationships aren’t an accident of human design; they are woven into the very fabric of creation. Let’s look at why relationships matter so deeply and how we can embrace this gift today.

Created in God’s Relational Image

I love the creation account in Genesis. It’s full of beautiful truths about who God is, what He has done, and what He promises to do.

Genesis 1:26 is one of my favorite verses:

“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.’”

Here we see the first mention of the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—“Let us… our image.” The Triune God, eternal and almighty, created humanity in His image.

Think about that for a moment: You. Me. Every single person we meet—from the friendly greeter at the store to the door-to-door salesman who ignores the No Soliciting sign—we are all image-bearers of God.

Why does this matter? Because the more we understand God’s image—His nature—the more we can understand ourselves and how we relate to one another.

God's Nature is Relational

In Genesis 2, we see God declare that it is not good for man to be alone. Out of His relational nature, He created Eve to walk with Adam. From the very beginning, God designed us to live in relationship.

Even when sin entered the world, God did not abandon His creation. He walked in the garden, pursuing Adam and Eve after their fall. Though sin brought separation—death, mourning, pain, and brokenness—God’s desire for relationship remained.

And He made a promise: a Savior who would crush sin, death, and the devil. That Savior is Jesus.

Restored by Jesus

The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus restored us into a right relationship with God. Through faith in Him, we are no longer enemies but beloved children of God. This shows us just how central relationships are to God’s heart.

Yes, we live in a broken world, but God still shows up. He gives us glimpses of His kingdom through the relationships we share with one another—a foretaste of heaven itself.

How to Receive God’s Gift of Relationships Today

Embrace your relationship with God.
Begin each day by remembering the most important relationship you have—your relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
Momming Is Hard — And Repair Matters Most

Even in our most imperfect moments as moms, repair is possible — and powerful. God doesn’t ask us to parent perfectly. He invites us to love deeply, apologize honestly, and trust that grace is still the glue. You are not alone — and you don’t have to get it all right to be the right mom for your kids.

That’s the cycle of parenting,” my therapist once told me.

At first, it sounded clinical. But then it hit me: of course rupture happens in any relationship — especially the parent-child one. It’s inevitable. What truly matters is the repair.

Without repair, the damage festers. It deepens. It settles into both hearts. But when we choose to go back — to apologize, to reconnect, to soften — that’s where healing lives. That simple truth gave me the permission I didn’t know I needed: to have grace for myself.

Even in my most imperfect moments as a mom, I am reminded that the redemption I experience through Christ is still available to me — and to my children — within our relationship. God doesn’t shy away from repair. That’s literally what Christ came to do. His mission was reconciliation: to restore what was broken, to reconnect us to Himself.

And through Him, we’re empowered to do the same — even when we don’t get it right the first (or fourth) time.

We’re the Apology Generation of Moms

We’re the ones learning how to say, “I was wrong,” “I got too loud,” or “I’m still learning.” Many of us grew up in homes where authority was prized over connection, and the goal was well-behaved kids — not emotionally secure ones. And while those before us were doing the best they could with what they knew, we now know more. And we can offer grace in both directions.

God still uses our missteps. He still works through our imperfections. And He calls us not to perfection — but to love.

Making All New Mistakes

A line I love from a movie says:

“I won’t make the same mistakes.”

“No — you’re making all new ones.”

I laugh every time, because it’s true.

I might break a pattern from my own upbringing — and then walk headfirst into a brand new mistake of my own. But that’s okay. Because God gives grace. And if He gives it, we can receive it. And we can offer it — to our kids, to ourselves, and to each other.

You’re Doing a Good Job, Mama

The first step to repairing with your kids is to repair with yourself.

Not by rejecting the parts of you that feel angry, exhausted, or totally lost — but by getting honest about them. By admitting where it hurts. By telling the truth to yourself and to God.

Because the truth is, we’re all flawed. And before we can heal from that, we have to accept it.

So take a deep breath — the one you’ve been holding in fear that you’re messing it all up.

That you’re not cut out for this. That you’ll never get it right.

You are cut out for this. You are a good mom.

You are human.
Walking With the Wounded: Encouragement for the Weary Helper

When helping someone who feels stuck in their pain, it’s easy to wonder if you’re doing something wrong. This honest, hope-filled reflection reminds weary helpers that faithfulness—not fixing—is the calling. You’re not the Savior… and that’s good news.

“For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.” — Romans 7:15 (ESV)

If you’ve been counseling for any length of time or simply walking closely with someone who’s struggling, you’ve likely met this person.

They show up faithfully. Maybe even tearfully. They speak with urgency, they say all the right things, they nod at your reminders of truth, and they may even thank you for your time and prayers. But week after week, month after month, they remain in the same pit; despair, hopelessness, and, dare I say, victimhood. They are desperate for change… but resistant to the call to do anything about it. Waiting for a rescuer. You leave the conversation emotionally drained, wondering: Am I doing something wrong? Am I enabling this? Am I failing them?

You're not alone.

The apostle Paul’s cry in Romans 7:15 is the cry of every believer who has felt caught between the desires of the Spirit and the weakness of the flesh. This internal war is not new. It’s part of the fallen human condition. But for those of us walking beside the struggler, whether as a biblical counselor, a friend, a spouse, or a sibling, it can be uniquely painful to witness. And exhausting.

Faithful, Not Frustrated

Biblical counseling and faithful friendship is not a results-driven endeavor. It’s a calling of faithfulness, not guaranteed fruitfulness. We plant seeds. We water them. We plead with the Lord. But only God gives the growth (1 Corinthians 3:6). There is incredible freedom in remembering that the burden of transformation does not rest on your shoulders.

Still, when someone repeatedly says they want healing, yet avoids repentance or responsibility, it’s easy to grow weary.

That’s why you, counselor or companion, need soul care too. Isaiah 40:31 offers hope:

“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;

they shall mount up with wings like eagles;

they shall run and not be weary;

they shall walk and not faint.”

If you’re waiting on your loved one to finally “get it,” you will wear out. But if you wait on the Lord, if you root your hope not in their progress but in His presence, you will endure. You will soar. Not because you fixed someone, but because you were faithful to reflect Christ to them, even when it felt futile.

The Ministry of Exhortation in Relationships

The Apostle Paul didn’t just empathize with sin; he exhorted the church toward obedience. The same must be true of us. Whether you’re sitting across from someone in a formal counseling session or living with them in your home, exhortation, truth in love, is a gift, not a burden.

When you see habitual cycles of blame, despair, or passivity, name it gently, biblically, and in love.

“What’s keeping you from taking the next faithful step?”

“Do you believe God can give you strength even when you feel weak?”

“What does obedience look like right now, even if it’s uncomfortable?”

And if they falter again, don’t take it personally. You are not their Savior. Keep showing up with compassion and courage.

You Are Not the Savior

This may be the most important reminder of all. Whether you wear the title “counselor” or not, it is possible to care too much in the wrong way.

If you find yourself anxious, avoiding rest, obsessing over someone’s decisions, or feeling emotionally tangled in their every step, you may be carrying more than God has asked of you.
There’s a difference between helping and rescuing. One walks with. The other straps a screaming, kicking individual over their back, making the decisions for them.

Sometimes, for the sake of both people, boundaries need to be clarified. In counseling, this may mean pausing or ending sessions when progress stalls. In friendship or family, it may mean stepping back with honesty: “I love you, and I’m still here, but I can’t want this more than you do.” That’s not harsh. That’s humble. And sometimes, it’s what God uses to wake the heart.

A Final Word to the Faithful

If you’ve poured yourself out in love, whether from a counseling chair or the dinner table and feel unseen or defeated, take heart. God sees you. God hears you. God is at work, even in the hidden places. Even in you. Remain faithful. Not because you're fixing them, but because Jesus is forming you, through every hard conversation, every tearful prayer, every moment you choose trust over control.

And if you’re weary today? That’s okay. You’re not alone. Take a deep breath. Rest in Christ’s finished work. And let these words from Galatians 6:9 speak courage to your soul:

“Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”

You are not the Savior. But you do reflect Him, patiently, faithfully, lovingly.

That is enough.

When You Don’t Feel Lovable: Why Baptism Still Matters

Even on our worst days—when faith feels thin and God seems distant—baptism stands as an unshakable reminder of God’s love. Not a feeling. Not a passing thought. A gift that speaks from outside of us: You are mine. I love you.

Baptism is one of my favorite theological topics to talk about. Today, I want to take a more personal lens—one that might speak especially to you if you’re in a weary season of life. (If you’re looking for a more in-depth theological exploration, click here).

I’ve been married for about 17 years, and we’ve got three amazing kids. It’s a wonderful life—but also an exhausting one. I wish I could say I knock it out of the park every day as a husband and father, but the truth is, some days are just hard. My patience wears thin. I don’t listen well. I mess up.

I remember one day in particular. I was worn out—physically, emotionally, spiritually. I had nothing left in the tank. While I knew my wife loved me, that day I didn’t feel very lovable. But then she looked at me and said, “I love you.” Just like that.

It hit me. There’s something powerful about love spoken from outside of you. It cuts through the noise. It reaches your heart in a way your own thoughts can’t.

Baptism is like that.

It’s an incredible gift from God—an external, tangible reality where God says, “I love you.” Even as a pastor, there are days when faith is hard. Days when God feels far away. On those days, I can remind myself intellectually that God loves me. But the beauty of baptism is that it’s not based on what I feel or how strong my faith is. It stands outside of all of that.

At the baptismal font, God chose me. United me to Jesus (Romans 6:1–5). Declared over me what He once declared over Jesus: “This is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased.”

So if you’re struggling right now—if faith feels distant, or you feel unworthy or unloved—here’s an ancient, simple practice: remember your baptism.

Dip your thumb or finger in water. Make the sign of the cross on your forehead. Feel the water. Let it ground you. Let it remind you that before you chose God, He chose you. And He’s still saying:

You are mine. I love you.

And if you haven’t been baptized—or you’ve been considering it for your child—we’d love to invite you to take that step. Join us at Family Day on August 10. It’s a joyful day of worship, community fun, and an open invitation to be baptized or talk more about what baptism means for your life.

Whether you’re exploring faith or rediscovering it—we’d love to walk with you.

I’ve missed you over the past 10 weeks. Thank you for being a congregation that values rest for your workers—I truly needed it. And now, I’m recharged and fired up for what Jesus is going to do next. The best is yet to come for the CG family of ministries.

I’m writing for two reasons:

To share what I did (and didn’t do) during my summer sabbatical.

To share my heart for the next season of ministry at CG.

What I Did (and Didn’t Do)

I shut ministry down in my head, heart, and hands. Seven years ago, during my last sabbatical, I stayed somewhat connected through email and my cell phone—and let’s just say, it wasn’t very restful. This time, thanks to our amazing CG team and my stellar executive assistant, Dawn McCannon, I was able to disconnect completely. No phone. No email. It was lovely.

We traveled—Florida, Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona. We visited four national parks, enjoyed beaches, read books, lifted weights (more than usual), and took mid-afternoon naps. Alexa and I soaked up time with our three teenagers, making memories we’ll cherish. Time goes by so fast.

On Sundays, I worshiped with my family like a “normal” dad. Receiving Word and Sacrament beside them was a gift.

My only work-related project was getting the majority of my first book, Confessing Jesus’ Mission: A Pastor’s Prayer for the LCMS, close to completion. I’m so thankful to Zach Zehnder, Rachel Grack, Trey Cox, and Kate Kness for their consistent editing and content consultation. Getting a book to the finish line is more work than I expected! We’re excited for this to be the first—hopefully of many—books published by the Unite Leadership Collective. We’re aiming for an October 31 (Reformation Day) release. I hope you’ll read it! It will give you deeper insight into our ministry approach at CG and our heart for the future of the LCMS.

Looking Ahead

I’m over-the-top excited to be back with our CG family! For the foreseeable future, Alexa and I are deeply committed to seeing what God wants to do through our church and school ministries.

I can’t wait for you to meet our new staff! They are fired up to join the mission at CG. We’re fully staffed and ready to disciple the found and reach the lost across the East Valley. What a blessing!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 90-Day Giving Challenge. I look forward to hearing your testimonies! I pray you continue to see CG as an excellent place to invest the resources God has entrusted to you. We are working hard to earn and keep your trust, and we invite each of you into a deeper walk with the Lord. Our lives are not our own—they are entrusted to us by the risen Jesus.

Finally, I want to thank our incredible team—our paid and volunteer leaders, pastors, vicars, deacons, and directors—who served so faithfully while I was away. I’ll be working with our directors to make sure others receive extended sabbath breaks as well. Many are so deserving.

I love each of you. It is one of the greatest honors of my life to be one of your pastors. I believe with all my heart: Our best days together are still ahead.

IN CHRIST,
Pastor Tim Ahlman

We were both finishing school. No health insurance. Almost no income—I worked at a restaurant. We were young, idealistic, and very much living on love and a prayer. Yet somehow, we never went without. Looking back, I see God’s hand all over it. We didn’t have much—but He provided.

Now, years later, with kids, a mortgage, jobs, and far more “stability,” I sometimes find it harder to feel secure. It’s ironic, isn’t it? One of our deepest human needs is for security—and the more we accumulate, the more tempted we are to trust in money or stuff as our safety net. But the more we do, the more we elevate the gift over the Giver.

Giving Honor Where It’s Due

Proverbs invites us to “honor the Lord with your wealth.” That begins with gratitude. It reframes everything we have—however little or much—as a way to thank the One who provides. When we do that, we start seeing money and possessions not as a source of control, but as an opportunity to trust.

What stands out in Proverbs 3 is the word “plenty.”
God promises our barns will be filled with plenty—but what does that even mean? My definition of plenty probably doesn’t match yours. And let’s be honest, none of us match God’s definition. Needless to say—I was in over my head. Around that time, I picked up a book called Your Money or Your Life. It wasn’t a Christian book, but it asked a powerful question I couldn’t shake: Does your money align with your values?

The first step it outlined was simple but challenging: look at where your time and money are going. That’s what you really value—whether you mean to or not.

Maybe your spending shows you value convenience (hello, Chick-fil-A).
Maybe your time shows you value serving others.

Once you see it, you get to decide: Is this what I want my life to reflect?

What We Treasure, We Follow

A fun example: I’m a Vikings fan. (Tragically.) Because I value them, my time and money follow. I watch the games. I buy the merch. I suffer every season.

More seriously, our family values are summed up in this:
Live simply. Practice hospitality. Show mercy.
We want our time and money to reflect those values—not perfectly, but intentionally.

I believe that’s part of what Jesus meant in Matthew 6:21:

“For where your treasure [time and money] is, there your heart [values] will be also.”

Jesus Doesn’t Tiptoe Around It

Matthew 6:21 is short—but it hits deep.
It’s not just about giving—it’s a spiritual x-ray.

Wherever your time, money, and energy go… your heart follows.
And that’s either shaping your life toward God—or away from Him.

Treasure Is About Trust

The things we treasure most are often the things we’re afraid to lose.
That’s why giving can feel like loss—until we remember who God is.

When we give, we’re saying:
“God, I trust You more than I trust my comfort.”
We’re inviting Him to shape not just our budget—but our heart.

It’s Not About the Amount—It’s About the Direction

Take inventory this week: Where are your time and money going?
Is that what you want to value?
If not, ask God to guide your heart toward what truly matters—and who He’s calling you to be.

Anchor Verse to Reflect On This Week

“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
—Matthew 6:21

Not Signed Up Yet?

This journey is still open to you. Open the fridge.
Bored? Turn on the TV.
Curious? Grab your phone.
Need to talk? Send a text.

Desire is instant. Gratification is instant.
But so is the next desire.
And if we’re not careful, we can lose sight of the long view—of what truly matters.

The most meaningful things in life aren’t instant.
They take time. Effort. Faithfulness.
But they are deeply satisfying—and they last.

Think of your closest relationships. A lifelong friendship. Raising children. A lasting marriage. These aren’t built in a moment, but they shape generations.

A Legacy of Love and Faith

One of our pastors shared a story about his grandparents, who were married for 61 years. The way his grandfather looked at his bride—like she was a movie star—left a lasting impression.

“He’d watch her walk out of the room and whisper to us grandkids, ‘That’s my babe.’ Their chairs were set up in the living room so he could hold her hand while they watched Bonanza.”

That kind of love—the kind that shows up daily, holds hands for decades, and leaves grandkids a little embarrassed—is a legacy.

But even greater was the legacy of faith.

His grandma was a spiritual powerhouse. She loved Jesus deeply and shared His love freely. She ran an in-home daycare and kept albums full of the kids she cared for. She taught Sunday School faithfully, even hosting a Bible study from her assisted living apartment.

Her kindness, faith, and quiet consistency pointed people to Jesus. And because of her faith—which was passed down—this pastor knows where she is today: with the One she loved most.

“My grandparents were generous with what mattered most.

Generous in love.

Generous in faith.

Generous in putting Jesus on display.”

What Will You Be Remembered For?

Most of us don’t think about legacy until much later in life—but the truth is, we’re writing it every day.

The way we love, serve, and give leaves an imprint—on our families, our community, and our church. And often, the most lasting legacy doesn’t come from big gestures, but from quiet faithfulness over time.

A Faith That Builds Over Time

“The righteous lead blameless lives; blessed are their children after them.”

—Proverbs 20:7

“They are always generous and lend freely; their children will be a blessing.”

—Psalm 37:26

When we give with the long view in mind, we’re not just managing money—we’re planting seeds.
