What Life Are You Building?

Author: Michael Heiden

We’re all building our lives on something. And if we don’t make sure that what we build our lives on is right, then we won’t experience true life as God intended it to be experienced with Him. The good news is this: In Christ, you can have a relationship with God where your sins are forgiven and you can receive His Spirit which will guide your life choices for the better!

Every person has to decide what they’re going to build their lives on.
You have to decide what you’re going to build your life on, and what you’re going to use as the foundation. You can choose any of these things:
  • Life in the flesh.
  • Life in the Spirit.

Building on the flesh does not lead to life.
The flesh is our sinful nature. It's what we are born with and what we wrestle with everyday. When you look at the Bible, the Apostle Paul tells us what a life built in the flesh looks like. From Galatians 5:19-20, "Now the works of the flesh (the wrong building blocks) are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God."

Building life in the Spirit is true life.
On the other hand, God invites us to build a life in the Spirit. The Holy Spirit whom the Father has graciously given to us in the power waters of Baptism. The Spirit, which empowers us to receive all that Jesus has to offer, like forgiveness and real true abundant life. And in the same section of Galatians 5, Paul tells us what life in the Spirit looks like, "  But the fruit of the Spirit (the right building blocks) is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit."

Conclusion
What you build your life on will determine the quality of your life. And since we all have only one life, it’s important that we make sure that what we build our lives on is solid enough to last forever. The flesh is temporary; it will eventually die off and turn into dust. But when we build our lives with God and his Spirit, then there’s nothing else like it!
